Background

The Nation calls itself the Numunuu. The Comanche National Museum and Cultural Center says it works to be a place where the Nation's story is told from a Comanche perspective, and it holds art, culturally based items, historical items, and library and archival material. The Nation is headquartered in Lawton, Oklahoma, where that museum and a language department both work.

Parks on its homelands

Each September the full moon rose over the Deadhorse Mountains and the Comanche rode south out of the buffalo-hunting grounds of what is now Kansas, Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle. Their route forked after fording the Pecos at Horsehead Crossing and dropped into Persimmon Gap, and NPS says a century of use left the trail a mile wide in places. US 385 from Marathon through the Gap still follows it. Source

Rocky Mountain lay within the extended territory of the Comanche Nation, whose people regularly came into these places. The Nation is in Oklahoma today, and the park counts the Comanche among the tribes it works with. Source
