Background

Descendants of the Quinault, Queets, Quileute, Hoh, Chehalis, Chinook and Cowlitz people make up the Quinault Indian Nation. The Nation calls itself the Canoe People, the people of the cedar tree, and lists what western redcedar gave them: logs for canoes, bark for clothing and split boards for houses. Quinault ancestors lived in family groups in long houses up and down a river on a physical and cultural dividing line, wide sandy beaches to the south and rugged cliff-lined beaches to the north. By-laws of 1922 and a constitution approved in 1975 form the foundation of the modern government. A General Council meets the last Saturday in March to hold elections, allocate fishing grounds and discuss tribal operations, and a Quinault Business Committee of four executive officers and seven council members carries the executive, business and legislative work in between. The reservation encloses more than 208,150 acres and 23 miles of Pacific coastline, and close to 700 people are employed by the Nation and its enterprises.
