Monacan Indian Nation
A nation today
Background
The Monacan Indian Nation describes itself as a federally recognized sovereign tribe headquartered on Bear Mountain in Amherst County, whose citizens descend from the Virginia and North Carolina Eastern Siouan cultural and linguistic groups. Its homelands cover Virginia west of the fall line of the rivers, sections of southeastern West Virginia and portions of northern North Carolina, and its stated mission is to honor, preserve and uplift the heritage, culture and sovereignty of the Monacan people. Its own history page records that the Nation became a state-registered corporation in 1988, was recognized by the Virginia General Assembly in 1989 as one of the state's eight indigenous tribes, registered as a nonprofit in 1993, developed a museum steering committee and bought 110 acres on Bear Mountain to hold in trust. The Mattaponi-Pamunkey-Monacan Consortium was created in 1981, the first intertribal consortium in Virginia. Tribal offices are at 111 Highview Drive in Madison Heights, Virginia, open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Its government is a tribal chief, an assistant chief, a six-member tribal council, a secretary and a treasurer. Tribal meetings are set five times a year.
