Background

Five members make up the Duckwater Tribal Council, a chairman, a vice-chairperson, a secretary and treasurer, and two members, and they govern a federally recognized tribe of the Western Shoshone whose community is primarily agricultural. Almost everything the Tribe runs sits on one road. The tribal administration complex on Duckwater Falls Road puts the administration office beside the K-8 elementary school, the daycare, a gymnasium, a health center with a clinic open five days a week, the natural resources division, the tribal court and the finance office. Senior services, law enforcement, housing and planning are on Newe Street, First Street and Second Street near the reservation's housing subdivision. The Tribe has also put in power, water and sewer at five RV sites near the housing office, rentable by the day, the week or the month, and runs a laundromat in Duckwater. Three standing committees sit under the council, on education, on housing, and on enrollment. The education committee meets every second Tuesday of the month.

The Duckwater Shoshone Tribe sits in Railroad Valley at the northern tip of Nye County and draws its water from the Big Warm Spring, the largest geothermal hot spring in Nevada. That spring is also the home of the threatened Railroad Valley springfish. Source
